Shop Here: Farmacia di Santa Maria Novella

December 30th, 2009 § 2

Nestled in Melrose Ave in Los Angeles is the Farmacia di Santa Maria Novella. Only one out of two in the US with the main Pharmacy in Florence, Farmacia di Santa Maria Novella has been in existence since the 1400’s. Their packaging has maintained it’s signature old world look. Some of their remedies are still created using their original formulas.

On this particular trip to LA, I was able to procure some of their Rose Water. Great as an antiseptic, relieves tired muscles in the bath, or as a linen rinse!

With New Moon from the Twilight saga coming out this weekend, it was only appropriate that we featured Evangilynn’s “Twilight 21″ Holiday Masquerade invitations. Evangilynn is a huge fan of the Twilight series and wanted to throw a fun 21st birthday bash in “vampiric” fashion. We created a custom crest for Evangilynn, similar to the Volturi crest worn by the Volturi family in the movie. The invitations were three coloured and printed on Crane’s Lettra #110 in Fluorescent White.

Tip: If you have a design that has a solid block of black, adding either red or reflex blue to the black ink will make it print darker. This helps to minimize the “graying” effect that typically happens with black ink. In this run, we added a little bit of red ink to the black. Another option that can be done is to dampen the paper to absorb the black ink better, this also allows the use of less ink. There are different ways this can be done. One way is to wet every other sheet of paper in the stack and place into a plastic bag overnight. Another way is to create a box and use a humidor to dampen the paper.

Late Night Run

During late night runs, I sit on a beach chair in our garage studio and watch movies until it’s my turn up at bat on the Vandercook. Here’s what it looks like from my beach chair:

Old Maid Card Swap: Tattooed Tina

August 27th, 2009 § 2

Through the Ladies of Letterpress, Blackbird Letterpress organized an Old Maid Card Swap. Each participant printed two different cards for the character they chose to create. Once completed, each participant would get a full deck. Tattooed Tina was our character in the swap. She’s an homage to the sensuous pinup girls of the 50s and the toughness of their contemporary counterparts. She’s equal parts Bettie Page, Kat Von D and a little rockabilly. When creating this character, we envisioned the boys off at war with Tattooed Tina’s pictures hanging on their mirrors and walls.

This was a fun project to work on. There were so many creative cards that came from very talented studios. Check out the other Old Maid characters here.

Learn Here: Scripps Birch Aquarium

August 15th, 2009 § 0

Last weekend, I took my goddaughter and nephew to the Scripps Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, CA. I had been to the Aquarium before. But it was fun to see it through their eyes. Everytime they saw a fish that even looked like it was in the Nemo movie, they went ballistic. “Look there’s Dorie!” “Look it’s Nemo!” “Vincent, it’s Gill! It’s Gill!” fish2

We were invited to a Tea Party

During the the week of Comic-Con in San Diego, we got the chance to check out the Alice in Wonderland touring exhibition. The tour included some of the actual set designs and original props that were used in the film. We can’t wait to see this movie when it comes out.

This parachute reminds me of my childhood. We used to have loads of fun playing parachute. I don’t have kids now. But I can imagine…one day when I do have kids, playing parachute on a nice sunny day.
